Author of Guitar QuickStart™
Mary Jo Disler, a charter member of the Guitar Foundation of America, has taught classic guitar privately, and in college classes for beginners in the Detroit area for over 40 years. Now retired from Oakland Community College, Farmington Hills, Michigan, she initiated guitar classes at Mercy College (now University of Detroit-Mercy) and at The University of Michigan-Dearborn during her career.
Guitar QuickStart™ developed in the college classes as a unique method for introducing the three pillars of guitar in a clear, concise way within one college semester: Music reading, chords & chart reading, and simple tablature as a gateway to staff reading. It is a classroom-proven approach, and not a clone of other popular methods.
As retired church organist, she maintains membership in The American Guild of Organists (AGO). Her recent publication of over 50 reharmonized hymn tunes is titled Hymn Harmonies for Organ, ISBN-13: 978-0964222922. Detailed information on this site page.
An opportunity since 2012 to arrange classic guitar and lute music for carillon has proven successful and enormously interesting. With gratitude for mentoring by Dennis Curry, carillonneur of Kirk in the Hills Presbyterian Church, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and the new Elliott Tower carillon at Oakland University in nearby Rochester, MI. A Collection of her arrangements for carillon was published by American Carillon Music Editions, Spring, 2016. Available for purchase at their site.
